Whether you are a long time Clay County resident or a recent transplant, you might be looking for some new spots to enjoy the outdoors. Check out one of these five outdoor destinations next time you have a free weekend.
#1. Cheaha State Park
Located in the Talladega National Forest, Cheaha State Park is a short drive from Talladega, Oxford, Ashland, Heflin, and Lineville. The Pinhoti Trail system winds its way across the Talladega National Forest, allowing hikers of all ability levels to enjoy the area’s natural beauty. One of the more challenging trails leads to Mt. Cheaha, the tallest mountain in Alabama.
#2. R.L. Harris Dam
On the eastern edge of Clay County lies Lake Wedowee and the R.L. Harris Dam. This is one of four dams that create lakes out of the Tallapoosa River. The dam creates hydroelectric power for Alabama Power. In addition to building the dam, the power company also maintains six public access sites along the lake’s coast. This area is popular with fishers as well as families looking to spend a day outdoors.
#3. Clay County Lakes
Clay County is home to three lakes that cover 13, 23, and 38 acres, respectively. These lakes are located just west of Delta, AL. They are a popular destination for fishermen looking to catch bass, catfish, sunfish, bluegill, and crappie. Note that the lakes do have size restrictions on the fish you can keep and those that have to be thrown back.
Whether you are hoping to catch your dinner or you just want to catch and release your prey, you can spend a peaceful morning fishing on the Clay County Lakes.
#4. Ashland City Park
Covering 27 acres, Ashland City Park is a great place to escape the bustle of city life. This park has trails for walking, a babbling brook, and forests composed of hardwoods and pine trees. Birdwatchers love to stop by and see the red-tailed hawks, great horned owls, eastern meadowlarks, field sparrows, and northern bobwhites. If you are lucky, you might even see a wild turkey crossing one of the park’s open fields.
#5. Lineville City Park
Another popular spot for birdwatchers is Lineville City Park. American goldfinches, common yellowthroats, yellow-breasted chats, prairie warblers, and more can be found circling the park’s two lakes.
